Poem: Halloween Poem

Halloween Poem

Last night many kings came to my door
and beautiful African princesses --
a monster or two,
Spiderman once or twice.

The little ones delighted by my witch hat
because this witch did not bend over to eat them
but crouched down to greet them
with a smile, on their level.

Then the ones for whom
this would be the last Trick or Treat
until they hold the hands
of their own little ones on chilly October nights.
I heard their joy -
one night to not act like teenagers
who know everything and are pretending to be bored.

When is it we get too old
To knock on a stranger’s door
And ask for something sweet?
