Poem: What is Distance?

What is Distance?

What is distance?
Sometimes miles only mark geography
And other times
There are canyons in every inch.

I fell into one of those canyons
When I turned to say
“Have you seen the moon tonight?”
And saw you were locking the door between us.

And then minutes later a joke about a scene
Collapses the bridge, folds up the miles,
Disintegrates the canyons
Between your door and mine.

So what is distance
If the heart cannot take its measure --
No one is ever too far away
When everything is held right here.
